Cuban Tree Frogs in Florida

Cuban Tree Frogs are inhabitants of Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and Cuba. Their young strive for space as well as foodstuff with indigenous Saint Petersburg frogs. This only makes the situation worse as the frogs are already under strain from human encroachment leading to habitat deficit.



FEATURES CUBAN OF FROGS:
The Saint Petersburg frogs may measure a maximum of 5 inches They have fluctuating colors from brown, green, gray or white .They can also camouflage by varying their colors from time to time Skin color may appear be continuous, speckled or spotted. Their skin gives off a substance that shields them from desiccating and also puts off predators

NATIVE FROGS IN FLORIDA
Arboreal tree frogs have around eight varieties in the family Hylidae.However only four are located in Citrus County. One of the Cuban frog species feeds on five varieties of indigenous frogs, tiny lizards and beneficial garden serpents.

LOCATION
Cuban tree frogs are located around Florida peninsula as far north as Cedar Key on the west coast as well as Gainesville in the north-central peninsula there also exists some accounts from the Florida panhandle and other states in the Southeast. They spend thr majority of their time at daytime hiding in confined spots such as in trees, under canopies and roof extends. At dusk they go out to feed on the windows and sides of houses where light sources serve as an attraction for insects.

IMPACT
Cuban tree frogs feed on native Saint Petersburg tree frogs and insects that would usually be food for local animals they invade residential areas and sometimes are found in people's toilets. Cuban tree frogs exude foul secretion that is really irritating to the eyes and noses of people especially when handled by humans. They are even known to infest electrical generating equipment and have in the past caused power shortages their breeding calls during spawning can be a huge disturbance as well.
